• COVID-19 cancels Portales Safe Trick or Treat

    September 16, 2020
COVID-19 claimed another local event as the Roosevelt County Chamber of Commerce and Portales MainStreet announced the cancellation of the Safe Trick or Treat event in downtown Portales.

“The name of the event has the word ‘safe’ in it and with COVID-19 spread still occurring in our community it just wouldn’t be safe for our children to participate in this kind of close contact event,” said Chamber Executive Director Karl Terry. “We’re hopeful that Portales Schools will be reopening for hybrid classes on Oct. 20 and we don’t want to set that back by holding this event right after they reopen.”

Currently the New Mexico public health order dealing with COVID-19 only allows mass gatherings of 10 or less. Event sponsors point out that if that order is in place it would be impossible to comply.

“We’ve had Heritage Days, Roosevelt County Fair, ENMU Homecoming and Peanut Valley Festival all shut down except for some virtual activities during this summer and fall season,” Terry said. “We’re still holding on to a little hope that we might be able to hold our Portales Lighted Christmas Parade. We’ll keep folks posted as we determine whether or not we can safely operate that event.”
