SafeWise Announces the 20 Safest Cities in New Mexico
According to statistics compiled by security firm SafeWise, Portales is among the safest cities in New Mexico, ranking 12th.
SafeWise released its “20 Safest Cities in New Mexico” report on March 26, 2018. To compile this report, the company reviewed the 2016 FBI crime report statistics and population data. Cities that fell below identified population thresholds (6,000) or that failed to submit a complete crime report to the FBI were excluded from the ranking system.
The evaluation is based on the number of reported violent crimes (aggravated assault, murder, rape, and robbery) in each city. If there was a tie, the poll also factored in the number of property crimes (burglary, arson, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft). To level the playing field, the company calculated the rate of crimes per 1,000 people in each city. This makes it easier to directly compare the likelihood of these crimes occurring in cities with vastly different populations.
SafeWise security analyst Laura Craner says, ““The Land of Enchantment may be facing rising crime rates in Albuquerque, but other cities are turning the tide. Small and big towns are working together with law enforcement officials to create safer cities across the state.”
